I will then examine Irenaeus of Lyon’s account of spiritual and sexual abuse that was being practiced in 2rd-century Gaul by a supposed Christian leader. While it is true that not all spiritual and sexual abuse by men in authority has been focused on women, in this post I will highlight two contemporary examples of what is, at heart, a very ancient evil, one that existed in the early church.
